Let me start off by saying that I do have an allergy to dog and cat dander, despite that I do have a dog. They are so wonderful to have a round not just for companionship.

Dogs stay awake when you sleep and alert you if something is happening.

They are natural hunters so any mouse in the house better watch out.

They keep unwanted animals, both 2 and 4 legged, off your property.

They will come to your defense if you are being attacked.

If it is cold they will lay with you to help keep you warm. I read an article several years ago where a homeless woman who had several dogs went to sleep in her tent, the night a deep freeze hit. The next day authorities found her tent, she was a live because  her dogs lad with her to keep her warm, unfortunately 2 of the dogs died in the cold.
