OFFLINE | My wife created two accounts for each of our birds: Moonie and Wynken. We used these pages only to play Farmville, which helped fulfill the neighbor requirements for ourselves and family members. (None of us wanted to friend a bunch of strangers just to play this game!) Several months ago, those accounts were locked and we were asked to verify our accounts with an SMS text message. Neither of our cell phones would do that! When Facebook changed the verification to a simple phone number back in May, we wasted no time in unlocking our pet's accounts.
On December 2nd, Facebook blocked both of those accounts again, this time with their profile removed, and they disappeared off of our neighbors list in the game. When we tried to log on, there was an error message that "Verification had Failed." 6 monthes after providing the number? What was the point in providing the number for "Verification" when they can decide you do not deserve an account and erase you at anytime? Both of those accounts were used everyday, had leveled up past level 50 in the game, and had a combined 280 farmcash on farms that has been taken away. We were not using those accounts to solicit or defraud strangers, defame real people, or hurt anyone. As I said, they only interacted with us and our family, no one outside our own network of friends and diehard Farmville players.
"Facebook requires users to use their real first and last name and date of birth. Providing false information on your account is a violation of Facebook's Statement of Rights and Responsibilities." Facebook will even ask you to send them a copy of your state-issued ID card (Your Drivers License) or a passport to prove it is your real name and unlock your account. Personally, I do not trust that Facebook had proved itself to be a good steward of people's real information. Yet they demand it. I feel that is far too invasive into people's privacy. I think people should be able to have accounts they are comfortable with, I am not comfortable sharing my real information publicly. I don't want my real name to come up on a search, and they will not let me put my real information on my account to protect it and still allow me to choose my username. I would be okay with that. I don't want my real name and photo public!
This could be solved with a Real Name function like Amazon.com, or Verified Account Status, like Twitter. Or, verify ID at the time of sign-up, not allow people to establish accounts and profiles THEN harass them. They do not require you to own a cell phone capable of recieving SMS texts, or prove your real identity at sign up. Yet, they require these things to continue using your account? It's sloppy, and bad public relations.
So, go ahead and create all the accounts you want. They may even let you extend the time you get to use it by allowing you to "verify" with a phone number, but Facebook can and will take it away from you without warning, explanation, or apology. |
