OFFLINE | And here we go with the newest Dimmu, one of the most loved/hated bands on the BM scene. I have always had mixed feelings about this band, I can't say their previous 2 efforts were good, but I don't find them that mediocre either, well, at least for In Sorte. Nevertheless, they were easily forgetable, somewhat.
This new album takes the band back to the 1997-2001 era, with a lot more symphonic parts supported by heavy keyboards. Even though there are a lot of enjoyable parts to it, I have to compare this album to a Mexican restaurant's menu. All the meals have a different name and might look different, but at the end the ingredients are always the same. Some dishes do sound better coordinated than others. But overall, strangely enough, they seem like they overdo it at times. I say strangely because my concern about many albums that came out this year was to be way too linear and boring, not doing enough to tickle the listener's attention. In the case of Abrahadabra, they could have gone the other way without hurting the integrety of the album a bit. At the end, it's an enjoyable piece, that has a few strong tracks (Dimmu Borgir) and some weaker ones, basically hurt by their attempt at making this album way too dynamic. Many releases still to come out this year might kick them out of my top 10, but so far, they are in the second half of it. They are heading in the right direction though. |
