OFFLINE | Robert Gibbs, the departing White House Press Secretary, was surprised by President Obama in the White House press room on Friday.
In a rare appearance, Obama met with reporters as Gibbs was giving his 250th, and last, briefing at the White House.
The purpose Obama's impromptu visit was to return a tie that he borrowed from Gibbs in 2004. Gibbs had loaned the powder blue tie to Obama during his keynote speech at the 2004 Democratic Convention in Boston. The tie was finally returned in a frame along with photos of Obama during that speech.
Obama told the press,"I mean, 10 minutes before we were about to go on stage, we were still having an argument about ties. I had bought five, six ties. And Michelle didn't like any of them."
"And then somebody -- I don't remember who it was -- turned and said, you know what, what about Gibbs' tie? What about Gibbs' tie? That might look good. And frankly, Robert didn't want to give it up because he thought he looked really good in the tie, but eventually he was willing to take one for the gipper. And so he took off his tie and I put it on. And that's the tie that I wore at the national convention," said Obama.
did he just refer to himself as "the gipper?" |
