| I worked at the Denver Dumb Friends League (DDFL), a humane society in Denver, for about a year before I met Sophie. Sophie's history stated that she was a stray in Arizona and was picked up by the local humane society but was then transferred to DDFL shortly after. I always wanted a Newfoundland. They are just so loveable and laid back. Every day when I went to work it was hard for me to leave without thinking of at least one animal I'd like to take home with me. The problem was, but maybe it was a good thing, my roommate would not agree for me to bring home any pets. I was willing to agree with him on this matter because my house would have been full of many different characters, until I met Sophie.
I was working in the dog area that day, which I usually did, and I fell in love instantly. I approached the kennel to peek inside, like I did all of the kennels, to make sure no one had urinated or deficated and I could not help but notice Sophie in the corner of the kennel. Most dogs would rush the kennel door trying to escape, but Sophie was different. She sat there with loving eyes and panted calmly as I opened the kennel door to sit with her and her kennel mate. She jumped up on the seat I was sitting on and she leaned up against me. That's where she stole my heart. This picture is the very first picture I have of her. I couldn't imagine my life without her, even if she eats paper every now and then. And she responded so well to her name and Peter (my husband) enjoyed the name as well that we kept it just the same. Her little nickname I like to call her is Sophie Bear, Peter's favorite is Sophie Buffet (because she has a buffet tray for her food bowls).
