Hi boys and girls!
Allow me to share with you my first love, the ENG cruiser tank:

Pay no attention to the consoles, that was a long time ago, since that I have read a few things.
Pros:
+ (except for the Aegis set) it is relatively cheap, can get the items from replaying missions
+ really easy to play, boardsiding and keeping the shields up, if that fails, then hull heals
+ doing a lot of shield dmg due to beam arrays, so in PvE it is easy to keep the aggro, also doing decent damage in PvE overall (won a few lower lvl PvEs with highest damage, outwitting escorts)
+ almost indestructable (except if you press the self-destruct skill, like I do sometimes...)
+ you will burst into tears of joy if you see the power levels
Cons:
- since the dmg output is not that good after stripping shields, it takes like forever to do a kill
- in PvP, well, forget it, kinda boring. They cannot kill you, you cannot kill anyone, so it is basically a stalemate. Most likely they will target someone else, but then you can dish out heals to your teammates
- slower than a one-legged dog on tranquilizers, RCS console is a must!
All in all, I enjoyed playing with it (maybe will return again to this style of play). It was easy, no brainer really. The only thing you need here is patience. Don't worry, you will not die even on Elite difficulty, just will take the kill longer time. Back then, in PvEs and mirror events it was beautiful to see 6-8-10 NPCs firing on me, and I'm like boardsiding, beam: fire at will and keeping the shields up. Then your torpedo-equipped friends will love you, finishing the whole story in no-time.
P.S.: in PvP I could only keep aggro, because I drove the opponents crazy as they could not kill me

So they tried and tried. Best threat generation against stupid players.
