There are many different types of channeling. Some may communicate with their spirit guides while others may go into an altered state of consciousness or even feel as if their bodies are temporarily occupied by another spirit. Darryl Anka and Esther Hicks are very well known for channeling Bashar and Abraham. There is no 'right' way to do this, so styles of channeling will vary depending upon the individual. The way one perceives the entity that is being channeled also varies because some may be more sensitive to energy while another is able to receive a message or envision their presence.

A medium can connect with an identified spirit that has crossed over, acting as a conduit between our physical reality and the spiritual. This is different from channeling because the spirit must be connected to the medium or the client in this life.
