The Celts envisioned the entire Universe in the form of a tree, whose roots grew deep into the ground and whose branches reached high into the Heavens. In time, the Celtic people eventually designated a tree to each Moon Phase in their calendar in accordance with its magical properties. Therefore, the Celtic Zodiac is based upon the cycle of the Moon, with the year divided into the thirteen lunar months established by the Druid religion.

However, the Celts did not use only trees as part of their astrological and metaphysical beliefs. While trees were the most sacred and most significant spiritual guides, each tree sign is also associated with specific planets, animals, and gemstones for a thorough connection to nature. As with the more minor tree associations, these additional connections were considered secondary to the primary tree signs.
