A privacy law that shields birth certificates has prompted Democratic Gov. Neil Abercrombie to abandon efforts to dispel claims that President Barack Obama was born outside Hawaii, his office says.

State Attorney General David Louie told the governor that privacy laws bar him from disclosing an individual's birth documentation without the person's consent, Abercrombie spokeswoman Donalyn Dela Cruz said Friday.

Abercrombie, who was a friend of Obama's parents and knew him as a child, launched an investigation last month into whether he can release more information about the president's Aug. 4, 1961 birth. The governor said at the time he was bothered by people who questioned Obama's birthplace for political reasons.

"No one has provided us the long form," Orly Taitz, a leading birther who has launched hundreds of lawsuits against the administration, told ABCNews.com. "If you have the proper papers, show them to us. Show us the long-form birth certificate. If you have it, show it to us."

Liberal MSNBC talk-show host Chris Matthews last month also called on the White House to release the documents.

"I am not a birther, I am an enemy of the birthers," Matthews said on his show "Hardball." But "why has the president himself not demanded that they put out the initial documents?"

"A year and a half ago, I asked that the birth certificate be put on the Internet because, Lord knows, if you have a birth certificate and put it on the Internet, what else could be the story?" White House press secretary Robert Gibbs told reporters in July 2009. "Nothing will assuage them."

certainly, there are a lot of **** conspiracy theorists who would not be convinced by the release of the original document, but i think there are many more americans, like me, who would be assuaged by it. i think he was probably born in the u.s., but the fact that they haven't released the document only leads to more curiosity about it. so it makes me wonder if the obama admin WANTS there to be controversy over it, because they feel it garners the prez. sympathy and support. i dunno, why not just release it? what harm could it do? the fact that they haven't released it is the only reason it still makes the news from time to time.

I'm not exactly SURE why everyone is so sure that Obama wasn't born in the USA.  Yes...I agree...they should just release it....if it's honestly valid.  The question remains as to why he won't release it (and leads people to think there IS something to hide).  Personally...I don't care if he was or wasn't born in the USA....just get our country back in order...and make us look like less than the fools that we currently look like to the rest of the world!

I'm not a birther either.  But I am curious as to why he wont release it.  I wonder if there may be something there (other than the state of his birth) that he may not want anyone to know about?  And if so...what might that be?

maybe he's illegitimate?  I dunno.  Do they actually keep copies of the orrigingal (long) BC?  I have the one from the hospital with my footprints on it, but that wasn't issued from vital statistics, so it was no good for ID to get my passport, etc.

Hawaii Gov. Neil Abercrombie suggested in an interview published today that a long-form, hospital-generated birth certificate for Barack Obama may not exist within the vital records maintained by the Hawaii Department of Health.

Abercrombie did not report to the newspaper that he or the Hawaii Department of Health had found Obama's long-form, hospital-generated birth certificate. The governor only suggested his investigations to date had identified an unspecified listing or notation of Obama's birth that someone had made in the state archives.

It has been reported that in 1961, Obama's grandparents, Stanley and Madelyn Dunham, could have made an in-person report of a Hawaii birth even if the infant Barack Obama Jr. had been foreign-born.  Abercrombie has only added to the confusion by admitting there doesn’t seem to be a birth certificate only a handwritten notation in the archives.

the further this goes, the stranger it looks.
