So what happens if you're thin but have a stout structure?

"nanny statism" and "government interference" of course - you're assuming because of the way I said that, that I don't agree with the opinion :-P

On one hand, obesity is becoming an epidemic and does need to be tackled, and a lot of people do need a bit of an extra motivation to help shed the pounds, but on the other hand, people should be encouraged to lose weight not forced to do it.

Where I work there people who insist on taking the cargo elevator because they're too lazy to take the stairs. I don't think government influence is necessary, but parents and corporations can certainly take measures. Such as decide the cargo elevator is for cargo use only. That would **** off some people I know, but all for the better.

Hell, I heard they were talking about taking kids away from parents if they were obese. (or maybe it was morbidly obese) Obesity in this country really is a huge (no pun intended!) problem.  We just need to educate people, put physical education back in schools, etc.

Couldn't you post something more original Miles?

That photo has been around quite a bit. I like the one with that really fat asian kid sitting in a McDonald's, but that one was actually taken in China.

To call obesity an epidemic is to mislabel it. Epidemic makes me think of a disease. Obesity is not a disease, but is a control issue and all the encouragement in the world will make someone lose weight. I know it is cliche, but they have to want it for themselves.

I fear a government that couldn't even get it right with the food pyramid, would never get something like this right. Besides, it is a gross overstep of Federal powers (of course that ain't stopped them yet).

Yeah let's spend tons of money on obesity education. What a joke. Is there anybody on this planet who doesn't already know what leads to obesity???
What exactly are you gonna teach people about getting fat that they don't already know???

Funny thing is, obesity has historically been reserved for the rich who had the means to eat what and when they wanted. In tUSA the obese are by and large the poor. From a percentage standpoint, there is an inordinate amount of those fat, poor people on Federal dole.

Speaking as a very large person myself (297 lbs), I must say that I agree with you.  It is a control issue.

But I'd also add that it would be a whole lot easier if there were more healthy choices available.  Next time ya go to the market, check the labels and see how few items there are that could be considered low fat,low cal, low sugar or is not loaded with saturated fats and high fructose corn syrup.

We are pretty much limited to the produce section if we truly want to eat healthy.  And there are almost no fast foods that are healthy.  A few smart choice / weight watchers frozen dinners, but thats about it.

Go to a restaurant and see how large the portion sizes are.  Compared to other parts of the world, we Americans eat two or three times as much at a meal.  And ya feel bad about not eating all of it coz hey...you paid for it right?  Hate to toss it out.

And thats not to mention all the foods we have in this country that are pumped up full of hormones and additives.

It's also amazing how many foods have that annoying MSG crap in it. MSG isn't really fattening as much as it is just toxic and bad for your health. What pisses me off is that MSG is a sea weed extract which means it can be labeled as a natural flavor which will confuse the buyer. It's best to buy whole foods and things you need to put together yourself and cook. Anything pre-made is pretty much bad. I was amazed to find out that even Top Ramen soup is bad because it contained MSG.

Is hard to get stuff without MSG all right, especially chinese/asian food. if you go into an asian market, you can buy MSG in 5kg and 10kg bags.....

how bout you do your thing, and i'll do mine. we don't all have to be healthy little  model-like autonomatons. it's okay for there to be different kinds of people. humans come in all shapes, sizes, colors, and personalities, so we don't all have to fit into the same mold. if some people want to do that, good on them, but this whole health/food police aspect that i've seen starting to develop just gets on my nerves. like what idiot doesn't know that mcdonald's is bad for you? speaking of which, i saw that mcdonald's has changed its happy meal to give kids less fries and add in fruit too. look, that's great that you want to give kids choices, but what's going to happen to all those apple slices? tossed in the trash, or saved for a snack some other time.

and dennis, of course there aren't many healthy fast food choices, because people don't go to fast food restaurants to eat healthy food. they go to splurge, and eat something greasy. if you want to eat healthy, then don't go to fast food restaurants. in fact, your best bet is not to eat out at all. make your own food from whatever healthy ingredients you want to use, or go to a place like "crispers" for a soup and salad.

basically, i'm sick to freaking death of liberals wanting to control and legislate every flipping aspect of our lives. let people make their own decisions. and yeah, people do make bad decisions, but that's for them to figure out and learn from. hell, i've learned from my mistakes. why is everyone expected to meet some idealistic criteria?
