OFFLINE | I recently got a bunch of plants from an auction and they were just about all filed with brown snails. I've been hearing bad thing about them, like how they will over-populate and every thing, but I was just wandering if they have any kind of benefit to a planted aquarium? I know lots of people keep lots of different kinds, so they can't be too bad can they? |

OFFLINE | My view on them is this: If you can tolerate them, do it. Most of the ones you find will be malaisian(sp) trumpet snails. They are an invasive species. I intentially keep them in my 29gal so I can have a constant food source for my target puffer. They also help keep the 29 clean since I have a messy eater in there. Some tank situations just are not great to have them in though. If you are using RO water then I would try to get rid of them because they can raise the PH. If you are not weeding them out though, they can get thick. At that point it's just a matter of preferance. But there are things you can do to knock them out. Do you have any othe inverts in the tank? |
