Hi I have been using a French Link Snaffle for Cody to be broken with, its been fine up to now. But he is getting stronger & he salivates too much. I feel I need more control, he also puts his tongue over the bit. The Dentist recommended I use a Dutch Gagg, has anyone got any more ideas or has anyone got any bits I could borrow, I am willing to pay postage costs ect. he is 5 or 5 1/2 inch and 3yrs old
Thanks Jo x

I ride Arn in a Dutch gag now, only for braking purposes really as he gets a bit strong out on hacks/in the jumping arena. I also started him aged 3 with a French Link snaffle and he still does dressage in one but can get a bit strong. I didn't change him to the gag until he was 5/6 as I am always worried about keeping his mouth soft but then only rode on the main hole for a couple of years before making the decision to drop the reins down to the 2nd hole for increased control. His gag now also has a French link as I think it is kinder on his mouth than a nutcracker action bit and he accepts it nicely. As I've never had the problem of tongues over bits, can't help you with suggestions there! Have you tried a flash noseband? Not sure if that would help (need someone who is more expert than me lol) but I find this also helps keep Arn on the straight and narrow (mostly.... )!

Thanks for your reply Jan, experimented yesterday with a snaffle and he was awful, so put a drop link snaffle with french link mouth piece & he was much better. Have lunged him in a french link gagg so might try riding him, its still kind but may just need a bit of leverage to remind him I`m there. My trainer also has a bit for me to try next week so will keep you informed. I am enjoying this, lol, its all part of him & me learning. My trainer also said I may need something a bit stronger for hacking and its good to change things around.

I have my haffie in a Dr. Cook bitless bridle. Although he can get strong (which he cold in a bitted bridle also) I can do one rein stops and it's very effective.  I have bits and he has taken to this very well.

ride my haffy in either a waterford snaffle (schooling only and sumtimes have lack of control, lol) but ride her normally and for showing in a rugby pelham, and it works fantastic
