What are your thoughts on Ben?

I SO wanted to like him!  He really turned on the charm at the end of Book 4 and I thought if Chase thought they should be together then he must really be a good guy.  I was willing to forgive his transgressions in the earlier books because he seemed sincerely sorry and even at the time only wanted what was best for the fae.  Even in the first book of COTO, we saw glimpses of what could be.  Maybe as much as I wanted to like him, I saw things that weren't there.  I kept thinking she (Elle) was trying to keep the sexual tension going and pretty soon the charming Ben would come back. I guess I was attributing the traits I wanted him to have on him when they weren't really there.  In my mind, since he had been around so much longer than Jayne I had imagined that he'd been waiting for her.  (That was my theory on why he was in the picture of Jayne and Tony from the dance, that he'd been waiting and searching for her.  I was totally expecting a "you complete me" scene, lol.)  I know, I'm a sucker for the romantic.  

The fact that they were bound was also something that he had going for him.  I'm a firm believer in marriage so once that happened he was the only one for her in my opinion.  At the end of book 2 I was really feeling guilty for loving Spike so much.  I was really torn because Spike was definitely more deserving of her than Ben but I was still stuck on the whole "binding" thing.

Obviously, Chase's revelations changed everything.  The real turning point for me came when he hurt Jayne's arm when they were waiting for the council meeting.  I started to suspect that I had been wrong about him as no decent guy would hurt a woman.

What are/were your feelings about Ben?  Did you like him?  Did you always dislike/distrust him?  Am I crazy for wanting to like him?
