OFFLINE | Renegade Back Story, Amended
Part 1: The Fall
2025: The Peoples Republic of China develops stable cold-fusion technology, launching China years ahead of the United States. This breakthrough technology increases Chinas domestic production, decreases their reliance on oil, and aids in furthering their defense technology as well.
In a desperate bid to keep up, America’s Government protests Chinas reluctant disclosure of their cold fusion technology and alleged violations of the Non-Proliferation Treaty by offering incentives to its corporations to stop outsourcing production (specifically in China, but applicable to all foreign nations)
The United States also begins to fund several initiatives to develop competing technologies as well.
2026: The American economy experiences hyperinflation fed by the higher production costs associated with more expensive labor as well as increased taxes to pay for the Government subsidies to these companies. To further cut government spending Congress holds its Sixth Base Realignment and Closure Hearing for the military. As a result of this hearing, the Government proposes the closure and withdrawing of military forces from key instillations overseas.
2027: Amidst massive layoffs and unemployment, America is launched into the worst Depression since 2009. A public outcry against the Government’s handling of the situation is seen across the country and worker-union backed political parties, representing the interests of the blue-collar-American-working-class, begin taking power.
2032: After 5 years pushing for the presidency, the Unionists Party wins the elections as well as gaining enough support from Congress to begin utilizing its power. The Unionists Party begins enacting bills that mutually benefit certain unionized companies and members alike, but exclude most all non unionists and companies. The American economy stumbles downhill even further, also fed by its continuing isolationism.
[My thinking is that the Unionists are trying to present themselves as a politically democratic and economically capitalist party while at the same time only ensuring the job futures for those in the unions and those companies that act in their interests.
Unemployment goes up because of higher wages to the unions, isolation, lack of foreign competition in the US market and lack of US activity in the global market has brought hard times upon the world. The Unionists would still have to portray this in a good light to the American people, so, they would resort to… perhaps not censorship… just tighter control over media outlets to turn information in their favor and put a bad light on the outside world.
*Note: Ok, so problem with using unions is that I’ve been looking at the figures on these guys and they really don’t make up a large portion on the work force (10%-12% per age group) in the US and has also been going down over the years anyway.]
2033: The past few years have seen global economic failure and technological development in most countries has also begun to stand still and stagnate. In response to America’s continued isolationism, it’s withdrawing of military presence form Europe, and to combat the economic recessions that have followed in the wake its isolationism, the EU establishes a protectorate among its member nations, also admitting non-European countries, recognizing them as members of this “New-World Coalition.”
[Unbeknownst to the American populace, combined with the Unionists pro-isolation propaganda against the outside world (Which may not have been totally inaccurate) and their enacting of bills censoring information, banning foreign press, regulating internet access, US citizens do not fully comprehend the severity of the NWCs rule over its member nations, or view it as Unionist propaganda. The fact that the NWC is a totalitarian body that governs with an iron-fist, is non-tolerant and very paranoid of any terrorist activity, (Essentially the Airport TSA of ruling bodies) and controls its member nations like a watch dog, goes by the American people in their search for an better alternative (and perhaps there is no better alternative, the NWC despite these aspects to the knowing few may appear better than the Unions currently in control of the US.
Keep in mind that, in this time period, I don’t think the war on terror is off, there might still be radical Islamic groups in Southeast Asia and in the Middle East and probably still terrorist attacks happening around the globe, thus perpetuating the fear and lack of tolerance to terrorist networks and feeding the paranoia in Europe… and Unionist propaganda as well.
Any information of terror attacks that do occur overseas would be turned around, manipulated, and reported such that it only validated the Unionists desire for isolation.
However, despite their power, US citizens know full well what the Unionist party is becoming; they are more restrictive than other administrations have been historically, have been neglecting the US people and acting “unconstitutionally”.]
Riots are once again seen in the American homeland and several anti-Unionist rallies end violently. Support for the Unionist Party begins to wane as other political parties rise up to support the ending of America’s isolationism.
2036: The United States, on the brink of another Civil War holds elections. The past few years have seen increasing support for the New World Coalition amongst Americans, and parties brandishing their interest in letting the US under the umbrella of the NWC have gained momentum.
At the same time, with America’s withdrawal from the United Nations and NATO 8-years preceding the formation of the NWC and continued isolation, the practice of international diplomatic, economic, security, and conflict resolution has shifted from the United Nations to the NWC, and NATO, as an organized body, has dissolved.
The result of the US elections is close, but by a 63% vote, the biggest pro-NWC party secures its seat in the White House. Unionist’s, demanding reelection, questioning the validity of the victory, and stubborn on letting America once again open its doors, begin violent rallies across the nation.
In lieu of the events in America, the NWC political body in Europe decides to recognize the United States as a member nation under its protectorate and issues an executive order for immediate police action in support of its ally.
[This could be likened to the US plan for Iraq, no long term game plan, just move in and win a quick victory. The Euros do not anticipate, nor are they equipped or prepared for, a long term stand-off.]
NWC member nations begin offering their support in mustering a standing army that will support America’s government, “enforce the policies there of”, and assist in establishing control and security within its member nation.
[There is still resistance by those who are pro-Unionist (which is a good portion of the US population, many feel there is still hope in isolation) and with those who have believed too much into their propaganda and have developed a xenophobic fear of the outside world. This gradually leads the NWC to take extra steps to quiet any opposition to their rule inside America. Unionist groups are disbanded and crack-downs take place and little in the way of mercy is given when breaking up Unionist/anti-NWC rallies.
Unionists really won’t be apparent in-Game and hardly ever mentioned. When they are mentioned it may be in reference to dissimilarity between rebel fighters and conflicting opinion about what the “Rebellion” is, or should be, about. Unionist could potentially have started the initial rebellion groups against the NWC, but the “Rebellion” itself, as it will evolve to when the game takes off (50 years later), goes far beyond, and has nothing to do with, the pro-Union isolationism. The “Rebellion” as it will be seen and felt in-Game will be about America recovering its independence and sovereignty. This aspect, even if the player fights with the US forces (I think we should start recognizing the difference, and stop categorizing the US forces that the player can chose to fight with as “NWC”) will be apparent as will be discussed in the Themes and History topic.]
It quickly becomes apparent that the NWC’s few interests in the United States are for its natural resources. With overreaching policy making and overriding of the United States’ own civil doctrines, the NWC establishes itself as the de-facto ruling body of the United States, leaving the current US administration only as a political figurehead.
[I am thinking that a brief rise in terror, both by Islamic extremists in Europe and the Mid-East and by Unionists in the US, brought about more strict measures by the NWC and less tolerance for civil disobedience. The Euros are very paranoid of Islamic Extremism.]
2040: In the four years since the elections, the United State has been pushed to the brink of Martial Law. The rights of the citizens have been stripped, curfews have been enforced; and even the US military and police forces standing next to, and being augmented by, those of the NWC, have too become labeled as outsiders and invaders.
The citizens inside the United States begin forming secretive underground organizations opposed to the NWC; although anti-government communications are being censored and listened to, personal meetings are arranged and take place among key “Rebel” leaders opposed to this faction.
The population after a time revolts against this instated power…
Part 2: The Rise
2045: After years of planning and coordination, uprisings against NWC coalition forces and the United States Government underneath their domain, begin to take place starting in rural areas, where NWC presence is smallest. The uprisings spread, forcing NWC withdrawal from smaller cities and towns out in the American Mid-west, and in the Rocky and Appalachian mountain communities as well.
2050: After five years of harsh fighting the battle lines have finally stabilized. “Rebel” forces control those areas where NWC presence was ousted in the early phases of the war, outside the main population centers.
[My thinking is that when the “Rebellion” started it caught the Euros totally off guard. Prolonged fighting eventually led to the surrendering of large portions of the US to Rebel fighters, leaving only main population centers, natural resource sites, and other areas of interest for the NWC as occupied territory, thus where they [the NWC] center most of their remaining forces.]
Heavy fighting between “Rebel” and NWC forces has wrecked most American infrastructure. Towns have been carpet bombed, farms are in ruin, and remote bombings inside NWC controlled cities have resulted in heavy civilian casualties from those who have been caught in the crossfire.
