| In October, 2003, one young astrologer met a couple of other young astrologers at a conference. She asked, "Why aren't there very many young people here?" They discussed what had been done previously to get more young people involved. Some small efforts had been made in the form of young astrologer panels and reaching across generations at UAC. But still, there were very few of us attending workshops and conferences, and even fewer having opportunities to speak and connect with others.
An idea was forming and a concept inspired. There should be some way that young astrologers could get together and reach out to others like ourselves. There should be a way that young astrologers could have a voice in the community and attract more young people.
So, the same young astrologer that asked the original question sent an email to a few young astrologers she knew and they sent emails to a few they knew and a little group became a bigger group. There was so much talent and passion in the hearts and minds of these young astrologers that the group quickly took form and organized a community.
They discussed astrology, their dreams, their desires, and their needs. They discussed what they wanted the group to stand for and achieve. They set out some goals and policies, and formed a loose government and began to work. Within a few short months, these passionate young astrologers had an organization.
Since then, the organization has continued to expand membership, programs, and dreams. The spring equinox of 2004 saw the first AYA sponsored classes, a mentorship program, and the creation of our first website.
In August of 2005 AYA members met up and made a big splash at the ISAR conference in Illinois, and our members have continued to attend conferences and organize events and other get together since then. Providing communal rooms to sleep in, networking opportunities with other young astrologers, and the occaisional free drinks at conferences have been a regular occurance since then, and we plan to expand our efforts in the future so that we can eventually host our own conferences.
With innovative technological capabilities, AYA is creating fresh ventures and opportunities with its expanding and unique member base. While we are still a relatively new organization, our ambitions far exceed our age, and all of us have the sense that we are a part of history in the making. |
