Hello, my name is James.

I've recently thought about the possibility of scratch building a robot similar to the Johnny 5.  I don't know if I'll follow through with the actual project yet.  I'm only just now considering this.   If I do start the project I won't be starting any work on it until later this year, probably in December.   And even then I would only be looking at building a starting module like maybe the base track assembly.

My dream is to build a fully functional robot that may actually be able to do useful practical tasks.  I'm not concerned with adhering precisely to a Johnny 5 replica.  It's just that this design appears to have many good features.  So it looks like a good starting point for a potentially functional robot.  I may differ from the Johnny 5 design as I move forward if other design features prove more practical.

In any case, my question in this thread is about the Arduino board projects.  I'm not familiar with the Arduino board, and I've been looking at the new Raspberry Pi computer on a card as the potential electronics for my projects.

I'm just wondering how similar, or different, the Arduino board is from the Raspberry Pi?   Will a knowledge of these Arduino projects be useful for for working with the Raspberry Pi?

Is the Arduino a mircocontroller board?  A Programmable Logic Array?  An actual computer like the Raspberry Pi?  Or something else?  I'm not familiar with the Arduino at all.

Thanks

Hi there, I think some of your questions will be answered in one or more of the books posted above.  I personally don't have much knowledge of them either which is why I shared this info.  I think aurdino is better for projects like this though.  Shig.
