Are you a Vitamin Junky? I’ve read a variety of different anecdotal reports over the years; some swear by them, others say it’s a waste of money.

It’s funny, though, how my doctor says that even Multivitamins or even just Vitamin C supplements are a waste of money, yet they’re all too happy to prescribe all kinds of other ‘pills’ that are about as toxic as can possibly be for our bodies,,, yanno?

Years ago when I started having sleep problems, my doctor prescribed some sleep med that left me feeling way worse. After than, I tried Valerian Root and that might have helped a little, but it didn’t seem to help at all if I took it every day.

Late last year or earlier this year, I tied that Osteo Bi-flex on 2 different occasions, and each time I wound up with severe joing inflammation problems. No joy!

Other than that, I tend to take a multivitamin once a day, and a 500MG Vitamin C tablet 2 to 3 times a day.

So what have been your experiences, preferences, and learning curves regarding vitamins and other dietary supplements?

Oh now THIS is my thread, LOL         But first, I must say I do suffer from various ailments,  Fibromyalgia, Osteoarthritis, Osteoporosis, Scoliosis, Degenerative Disc Disease, Spinal Stenosis among others, so I do need to take supplements.

I take Calcium, Multi vit. Vit. C, Omega 369, Magnesium, Milk Thistle (helps keep the liver detoxed from meds) Cranberry, Melatonin, and probably a couple others I've forgotten. lol

Firm believer in supplements and have been for awhile ....

Glucosamine (had cartilage removed from my knee at 14 from a basketball injury and couldn't hardly walk about a decade ago, swear by this)
Fish Oil  (great for the heart)
Milk Thistle (liver detox)
Biotin (hair and nails)
Potassium (helps with muscle cramps if I haven't consumed enough water and from working out)
Melatonin (great for enhancing sleep, among aiding the nervous system and it's an antioxidant, it does several things)
DHEA (just started taking this about 3 months ago ... it does various things ... energy enhancer, relieves stress, hormone balancer)

Ooooh never heard of Biotin, I'll have to look into that one, and what's DHEA, I'm sure I could use that one also. Thanks Suzie Q!

The older I get, the more vitamins I need.  Right now I'm taking a women's formula multi (which has a bunch of good stuff in it), Vitamin D megadose prescribed by my doctor, Magnesium, and Calcium.  And I'll probably have to add some Potassium because of the new medication I'm taking.

Most vitamin tablets make me puke -- I kid you not. I don't know if the dosages are too high for me or if it's something the vitamins are mixed with (ie) oyster shell calcium tablets, but I don't see the point in taking (and paying for) supplements I will end up flushing down the toilet.

I'm the same way Donna ... have a hard time tolerating the capsules and coating most have on them so they are digestible (?).

I do choke down 4 fish oil a day for my heart, magnesium and a One-A-Day for women but guess I should probably think about up'ing that to a "silver" variety now that I'm almost 50.

The dietician I've visited on occasion says it's more important to have a balanced diet and get the nutrients from food rather than a supplement but we all know that's hard to do.

Not to mention what a big ($$$) business the vitamin industry is ... always makes me suspect.

One thing about a healthy balanced diet is that it can be fairly expensive too, especially if you're targeting "Organic" foods. But I suspect that the nutrients from supplements are absorbed better into our systems when taken with food rather than on an empty stomach.

How many people find they don't drink much alcohol anymore given the supplements & meds they're on? I swear, there are times I can be completely drunk on a half a can of beer!

I started taking Biotin several years ago ... it's just good for the nails and skin  : ) keeps things growing and the the hair is shineir and healthier as well as the nails not being so brittle

and DHEA *google* it ... it has lots of good benefits ... especially as we age, our hormones decrease   ; ) ... and energy etc ... like I said, I've been taking it now for about three months, I purchased the kind that is time released over a 24 hour period ... I've noticed a difference

I'm not a multi-vitamin person either ... every time I go into GNC to purchase my supplements they try to push them on me and I tell them NO ... I've figured out what works for ME ...
