I figured I would pop the forms cherry.  I have a problem and that is I'm a Johnny Five addict.  I love everything about him and can't get enough.  I currently have a aluminum model of him and eventually plan on building a full size version.  Next....

HI!! I'm also a little obsessed with Short Circuit! As most of us are! I currently have 23 Robot V's? All at stages of customisation, time is the thing I don't seem to have enough of! After I 'release' all my units, my next stage is to plan on Robot V version 2.0, then hopefully, if interest is there, will look at Version 3! All will be revealed!! haha.

I would love to build full size one day, on the cheap, just to prove it CAN be done!
Cheers

Hi Shig, Im currently working on a movie accurate 1/6 scale Johnny Five using 3D printing. Just wondering if there is there anywhere on this forum where I could show my work?
Ive only just started, and have only got the track covering modeled up so far(Still a work in progress), but it would be great if you made a customs section or something like that.
Just a thought.

I will probably make an upscaled version too, to match the size of the Jozrobotics Robot V, and make custom movie accurate parts for the Robot V.

Cheers.

Heres what I have so far(Click image for bigger view) -

Hi There, and Welcome! Yes there is a section for toy/models, which has a 3D printed parts category. You are more than welcome to post them there. Or I can always create a specific category for 'custom' builds. Its all new to me! haha

Cheers for sharing
Shig

I work in IT (sysadmin). I've loved J5 since I saw SC2 as a kid. Maybe I saw SC1 first but I loved SC2 much more. I would have watched it all the time but we didn't have the VHS.

I made my own J5 out of bluetack and paperclips and bits of old electronics when I was a kid, he was pretty terrible.

I just received my parts and I think it's going to be a slow build, because I'm getting into quad copters too.. plus working fulltime+part time masters study = not a lot of free time.

Randomly the other day I thought of J5 and remembered that longing feeling of not being able to watch it, then I realized, hang on, I can watch it whenever I want! 30 min later and I was watching it. Really surprised me how well it's (SC2) has held up. I think the movie probably had a budget with money allocated to Steve Guttenberg, and when he turned it down the used it on the film.. why else would they gold coat J5??

Hi, my name is James

I thought I'd introduce myself.   I see this forum is quite sparse in terms of members and posts.  I've only become interested in the Johnny Five recently.  Although I had seen the movies years ago and always liked this robot style.

As Shig had mentioned (the forum owner I presume?) I too would like to build really inexpensive homebrew imitation of a full sized Johnny 5.    Whether such a dream is even remotely possible I have no clue.  I've only just recently started thinking seriously about the possibility of starting this project.  Although I have built robots in the past, but nothing this ambitious.

My goal (or dream) is to build a robot that is at least similar to Johnny 5.  I'm not concerned with trying to duplicate the movie robot precisely.  I'm far more interested in functionality.  So I'll be quick to change things up on the fly if a more practical design presents itself.

My current "plan" which is still just a consideration at this time.  Is to build the track base first.  I've seen several robots that were basically a Johnny 5 track base with a head.  No body or arms.  And even those robots look pretty cool.  So that might be a realistic place to start.   Even a base with a head and some arms coming right off the base might be a practically useful robot that could do things.    That's a far more realistic goal than trying to set out making the complete body and arms right off the bat.

I've also been thinking that I might start out by building a very lightweight prototype base and track.  Something make of really cheap materials like plastic water pipe glued together for a frame etc.   Just keep it very lightweight, cheap and simple.   This would also require smaller motors etc.  The whole project could be done pretty quickly and inexpensively.

This would also serve as a great learning experience to get bugs out before attempting to design or build anything more costly.   The experience of building a simple lightweight base would go very far toward helping to design a better base.    Plus if it works out it might actually pay back in terms of writing a book on how to construct one.   Then I could take that cash and put it back into a more advanced base.

Anyway, that's my "dream".  Don't know whether I'll even actually do that much.  But that's what I have in mind right now.  I won't be starting any actual work until at least December.   I have too many other things to do this summer and fall.   But am taking time to learn and collect information, plans, and ideas.

I will of course do some work on drawings, etc., before December.  But I don't plan on starting any actual construction until then.   Whether I actually start the project in December will depend on what kind of information and plans I can come up with before then.   If it looks like it's going to be more than I can realistically handle I might just let it slide as a "dream" that never materialized.    So only time will tell on that one.

There is a possibility that I could build something really simple before December.  But if I do that it will be an extremely simple prototype not even remotely resembling a Johnny 5 track.  In other words, I might toy with just building a very simple straight track just to see how that goes.

In any case, I just thought I'd share my dream.  Where it may lead is anyone's guess.
