This is a place for any Weekes families out there who have roots in Caribbean islands (possibly linked with Chandler, Dowden, Gill, Greaves, Medford, Whitehead, and others).

For example:

The Weekes in the Grenadines

After emancipation of the slaves in the Caribbean (1834) many artisan European families continued to live and work in the islands, but it became increasingly difficult to compete skilled trade with those newly freed people who had honed their skills from their European friends and by the following generation during the 1870’s on many these families left Barbados for other colonies.

In about 1848 one Mary Ann Weekes was born in Barbados. She married James Francis Searles (1838-1900). Mary and James had three children and she died in about 1898 in Grenada. Other families of Weekes went to Grenada.

Henry Allen Weekes

Another Ralph Weekes married later on 23 July 1864 (to Margaret Anne Davis in St John, Barbados). We haven’t yet found their parents, but they did have four children:

Eliza Jane Elvira Weekes (b.05 Jun 1867 c.14 Jul 1867 St John, Barbados)
James Hamilton Weekes (b.10 Feb 1870 c.13 Mar 1870 St John, Barbados)
Henry Allen Weekes (c.14 Jul 1872 St John, Barbados)
Eliza Caroline Weekes (c.21 Nov 1875 Barbados)
Joseph Edmund Weekes (c.21 Dec 1879 Barbados)

Although records have not yet been found to confirm the following facts, we believe that Henry Allen Weekes left for Grenada close to 1900 and at that time married Louisa Harris. They had the following children:

*Lloyd McDonald Weekes (b.1901 Mount Moritz, St George’s, Grenada)
boy Weekes (b.1906 Mount Moritz, St George’s, Grenada)
    *Elsie Weekes (b.abt. 1908 d.30 Jul 2004 Mount Moritz, St George’s, Grenada)
boy Weekes (b.25 Jan 1912 Mount Moritz, St George’s, Grenada)
Iona Weekes (b.13 Nov 1914 c.10 Dec 1914 Mount Moritz, St George’s, Grenada)

Lloyd McDonald Weekes and Griezel Lewis (spinster aged 17 and daughter of Joseph B Lewis and Anna Laura Greaves) married on 08 May 1926 in St George, Grenada. Witnesses where Lloyd’s mother Louise Weekes (nee Harris) and Leonard Lewis. They then had four children:

child Weekes (c.08 May 1928 St George, Grenada)
child Weekes (b.1929 St George, Grenada)
child Weekes (b.Jul-Sep 1931 St George, Grenada)
child Weekes (b.1933 St George, Grenada)

Elsie Weekes had a child when she was 19 and two years later, when she was of age, married Clarence Dyer Searles (a laborer b.24 Jul 1907 son of Edward Seifort Searles and Louise Dowden) on 21 Nov 1929 in Mount Moritz (St George, Grenada). It has not been conclusively established yet how many children the couple had but here is a list of names currently submitted:

    Clarence Cecil Searles (1931-2007)
    Claris Searles (abt 1932)
    Arthur Searles (abt 1933)

Their other children not mentioned are Sinclair, Elton, and Effie.
