OFFLINE | FISHING SOFT PLASTIC FROGS
I think the first soft plastic frog I had ever used must have been the Zoom **** Toad. A little hesitant at first as I’m sure many people were I was not at all disappointed with its performance. Today there are many other brands of soft plastic frogs on the market. Although many of these may look the same their performance can vary somewhat. There are some that float which people have said makes for easier fishing through the heaviest structure and grass whereas most sink slowly. I have never had the problem of snagging much even with normal frogs, as when they are rigged properly they are weedless. There are mainly two ways to rig your frogs and a number of ways to fish them.

The YUMM Buzz Frog. The Ribbit Frog
The Zoom Horney Toad Case Plastics Buzzin' Frog
TEXAS RIGGED
Rigging your frog Texas will allow for further casts, also making it possible to fish the lure at different depths. The extra weight also adds to the frogs swimming action on the surface during retrieval. When being retrieved over lillies or thick grass, you could pause over the openings letting the frog drop down. I have also had success fishing the frog on the bottom, working it in a number of different ways, bringing it up and letting it drop, dragging it over rocks and any other structure, even a slow swimming like retrieve mid water.
WEIGHTLESS
I have found that fishing frogs weightless makes for less snags through thicker structure. The casting may be a little tougher although most frogs have a nice casting weight to them. Fishing weightless makes for awesome fishing through flooded grass, over lillies, thick matted grass and even between standing structure and jetties. Fishing the weightless frog on the surface can be really exciting, the leg action churns up the water, some frogs leaving an awesome bubble trail which can really make for an aggressive take. |
